This paper deals with the topic of copyright with an emphasis on its protection in the digital age. The rapid development of digital technology facilitates the availability of creative works, but also leads to new forms of copyright infringement such as piracy, copying, unauthorized distribution. Copyright together with industrial property rights and related rights are a key element of the broader concept of intellectual property. This paper provides definitions of the terms author, author's works, copyright and their realization and protection. The importance of copyright protection has been evident since ancient times. Throughout history, we have witnessed the complex development of the legal framework for the protection of copyright both on a global level and in the Republic of Croatia. This paper analyzes the existing legal frameworks of protection with a special focus on international conventions, European legislation and domestic laws. The rapid development of technology has led to the question of how to adequately protect copyright while not jeopardizing the freedom of access to information and content? The answers can be found in The Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market. Bearing in mind that technology advances every day, it is difficult to legally regulate all aspects of copyright protection, even though the Copyright Act was approaching the level of protection that it aims for. The importance of regulating content before posting it online is a key element in combating copyright infringement.
